Former Leeds United midfielder Stephen McPhail backs Cardiff City to gain promotion from The Championship to the Premier League.

Former Leeds United midfielder Stephen McPhail believes that Cardiff City have enough quality to earn automatic promotion to the Premier League.

The Bluebirds were relegated to the Championship from the English top flight at the end of last season.

Cardiff are expected by many to bounce straight back up, but results have not been doing their way so far this season.

Heading into today’s Championship clash against Leeds at the Cardiff City Stadium, Russell Slade’s side find themselves 11th in the league table with 19 points from 14 matches.

Slade was appointed the new Cardiff boss in early October following the departure of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, and things have improved somewhat under him.

McPhail, who was on the books of Leeds from 1995 till 2004 and also played for Cardiff, believes that the Welsh outfit can still finish in the top two of the Championship this campaign.

‘Cardiff are a little bit off the pace right now, but they seem to have picked up since Russell Slade was appointed manager and I hope they keep that going’, the Shamrock Rovers striker told WalesOnline.

They have enough quality to challenge for a top two finish and earn automatic promotion. I wouldn’t rule that out at this stage but if they can find some consistency then certainly a play-off spot would be a success’.

Leeds are currently 18th in the Championship table with 16 points from 14 matches, just five points above the relegation zone and eight points behind sixth-placed Middlesbrough.

Are Cardiff good enough for promotion this year..?
